The New Bern/Craven County
school system is a consolidated countywide system which is accredited
by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools as well as the
North Carolina Department of Public Instruction.
The number of public schools totals 26 (14 elementary schools, 5
middle schools, 3 high schools, and 4 special programs). The average
class size is 27 pupils. In addition there are 3 area private schools
from which to choose.
Both Craven and Pamlico Counties offer a variety of courses of
study at their well-established Community Colleges. Services include
basic education programs, two-year technical and college transfer
programs, and one year vocational programs, plus extension programs
in occupational, practical, and vocational courses.
Four year degree courses are offered locally by Mt. Olive College.
East Carolina University is only 45 minutes north of New Bern which
offers a broad Liberal Arts base of study plus their well-known
Medical School.
HIGHER EDUCATION
Craven Community College and Pamlico Community College offer
a variety of courses of study to meet the needs of individuals and
businesses in the community. Services provided include basic education
programs, two-year technical and college transfer programs and one-year
vocational programs, and extension programs in occupational, practical,
and vocational courses of study.
Four-year degree courses are offered locally by Mt. Olive College.
